Spirit of Park Royal

Celebrating the concepts of community and connection, using photography as an intimate language.

︎ Over my career, photography has opened the gates to multiple unforgettable experiences. Working with Garden Studios to create this body of work unlocked one of these magical doors.

In 2022, I was commissioned by Garden Studios to document the community of Park Royal, their new neighbourhood, and create an exhibition. The project aimed to introduce Garden Studios to the current community with an artistic initiative.

During the initial brainstorm, I suggested using my old medium format camera and black and white film. To explain why, I presented a previous project I carried out in an artistic residency at the international photography festival RevelaT, in Barcelona. The idea of photographing this way, slowly and organically, was well received.

Over three intense weeks, I met and photographed a wide and diverse group of interesting people. I believe that working with an analogue camera helped to create a deeper connection, allowing us to slow down and truly appreciate the experience.

The day of the opening exhibition was one of the most emotional moments in my career. I saw the faces of everyone photographed in the previous weeks, all together in one place, while they discovered their portrait for the first time hanging on the walls. Their reactions were priceless. I was genuinely moved.

Thank you to Garden Studios and the Park Royal community for allowing me to be a part of their family. Having the opportunity to photograph such an inspiring group of people was a gift.

Yushu Gallery

Light, objects, textures and an atmosphere of calm filled this unique space. Yushu Gallery is a hidden gem in the heart of Oxford, a place to enjoy the art of slowing down.

︎Over nearly a decade The Yushu Family has built a complete system of private library design in China, including space cultivation, booklist design, and a meticulous curation of arts and crafts. Now, they are bringing their passion for Chinese culture and aesthetics to the UK.

The founder, Andy, invited me to exhibit my work in a serene and intimate space in Oxford, surrounded by a beautiful selection of Chinese sculpture and pottery. I chose to display handmade silver gelatin prints from my project "Pure”.  A collection of pictures which invites the viewer to reflect on the frenzied way we live in developed societies through portraits of individuals who live differently, at a much slower pace.

Walker Art Gallery

A fabulous collection of paintings and a fascinating room filled with the most refined sculptures await you in the biggest museum in the UK outside of London.

︎ For my second visit to Liverpool, (the previous one was about ten years ago when I was still living in Madrid), I sought out some recommendations from a couple of local friends. Both agreed that I must visit the Walker Art Gallery. I didn’t know what to expect as I had never heard of this place before, but what I found was fantastic.

The Walker's collection includes works by Giambattista Pittoni, Rembrandt, Poussin and Degas, and a wide collection of 18th and 19th-century British art, including prints, drawings and watercolours. It also holds 20th-century works by such artists as Lucian Freud, David Hockney and Gilbert and Georg, amongst others.

However, aside from its impressive collection of paintings, what fascinated me was the sculpture room. Bathed in a beautiful afternoon light, the pieces seemed to come to life, sending mysterious messages to one another. Walking slowly between them and soaking it all in was a stirring experience.

Calle Oscura

On attention, pause and reflection. An intimate conversation about my photography journey with Jota Barros.

︎One of my favourite moments of the month is when a new episode of  “Calle Oscura” is released. Jota Barros, an enthusiastic photographer and educator is the creator and host of the podcast.

Over the last few years, I have enjoyed his conversations with some of the most important contemporary Spanish photographers, taking notes and feeling inspired.

When Jota invited me to be a guest on "Calle Oscura", I was flattered. You can now listen to our, quite long, conversation about photography and life in the link below.

Home Farm

An iconic project, spirituality and some cakes. A day with the architect John Pawson in his Home Farm.

︎ Before becoming a professional photographer, I studied technical architecture at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and worked as a project manager in Spain for nearly 15 years. So when I received the call to photograph John Pawson, one of my favourite architects, at his Home Farm in the Cotswolds, I was particularly excited.

John Pawson has always been a source of inspiration to me. I admire his minimalistic, serene, and harmonious approach to design. They say you should never meet your heroes, but spending a day with him turned out to be a genuine pleasure.

Home Farm is an iconic contemporary building. I had seen several reportages since it was completed, so having the opportunity to experience the space for myself was priceless. During the photoshoot, I bombarded him with technical questions: from the concept and choreography of the space, to its materials, and the complex construction process. I felt privileged.

John was very curious about my transition from architecture to photography, as it is also one of his passions. As we worked, moving from location to location over the course of the day, he was very generous, kind and remarkably patient.

Knowing of his interest in spirituality, I decided to gift him a book that is very meaningful to me: "Biography of Silence," written by the Spanish priest Pablo D'Ors. This book is a concise yet powerful essay about the author's journey in meditation. I hope he enjoyed reading it in one of the serene corners of his breathtaking home.
