Walker Art Gallery
A fabulous collection of paintings and a fascinating room filled with the most refined sculptures await you in the biggest museum in the UK outside of London.
︎ For my second visit to Liverpool, (the previous one was about ten years ago when I was still living in Madrid), I sought out some recommendations from a couple of local friends. Both agreed that I must visit the Walker Art Gallery. I didn’t know what to expect as I had never heard of this place before, but what I found was fantastic.
The Walker's collection includes works by Giambattista Pittoni, Rembrandt, Poussin and Degas, and a wide collection of 18th and 19th-century British art, including prints, drawings and watercolours. It also holds 20th-century works by such artists as Lucian Freud, David Hockney and Gilbert and Georg, amongst others.
However, aside from its impressive collection of paintings, what fascinated me was the sculpture room. Bathed in a beautiful afternoon light, the pieces seemed to come to life, sending mysterious messages to one another. Walking slowly between them and soaking it all in was a stirring experience.
